"Hey! "William Schwartz :: New Sculptures and Op Art

"Hey!"
@ Arts Collinwood Gallery
May 16-June 14th
The exhibit is free and open to the public.
Opening Reception :: Friday May 16, 2008 / 6-9pm
Closing Party :: Saturday June 14, 2008 / 6-9pm
The body of work selected for this exhibition consists primarily of his op art pieces. Mesmerizing eye candy is the irresistible attraction. Then, hopefully, the materials used and the many possible interpretations of the titles he uses will create a lasting effect within the mind of viewer.

He views the work as a sort of anti-advertising: an advertisement against consumerism. He does not assume to tell anyone how they ought to think or feel about the work, as it is truly for each individual to come to their own conclusion – a product of their own minds. And, as always, the work he makes is for anyone, yet he understands and accepts that it may not be for everyone.

Artist Bio:
Self taught artist Robert William Schwartz was born of Irish, German and Mexican descent in 1974, and grew up on a 25-acre farm in Avon, Ohio. A Bachelor of Arts in English from Xavier University, Schwartz began his self-education in art history after having graduated. Minimal, existential, socially critical poets such as e.e.cummings and Charles Bukowski led Schwartz to discover Dadaism and Duchamp. Duchamp’s found objects, readymades and suggestive titles gave Schwartz the courage to attempt a path as an artist. Schwartz moved to Tremont at age 24, and quickly began showing in local galleries. The poetry of his early minimal, politically and socially critical works has evolved into a more complex visual rhetoric as he has accumulated a broad array of craft knowledge over the years. He hopes that his very purposeful choices of materials, paired with suggestive titles, will endure/linger in the mind of the viewer – a very Duchampian characteristic.

THIS IS A TEST - JOSH BANASZAK @ DOUBTING THOMAS

This is A Test, an exhibition of paintings by Josh Banaszak. The works are based on thinking and not thinking. Media includes oil paint on canvas and whatever else makes marks, the artist's works have never complied well with rules or intricate framing and other unnecessary fancies. Josh's paintings have an energy about them that tkes over any setting. Josh lives and works in Cleveland and studied at Cleveland Institute of Art.

Charmaine Spencer @ Sculpture Center

Charmaine Spencer @ Sculpture Center
FRIDAY, MAY 2 5:30 TO 8:30 PM OPENING IN THE EUCLID AVENUE GALLERY 6:30 PM ARTISTS TALK WITH CHARMAINE SPENCER AND BRUCE EDWARDS, SCULPTOR AND EDUCATOR

Spencer’s artwork is green in the making and greener in the message. Using cast offs and reconstituted items she describes as readily accessible, easily processed materials that have been made available by consumer-discarders, Spencer creates bold sculptural works with a subtle social message concerning shelter. She disassembles, reforms, and transforms rough cut oak lath, hemp rope, wood strips, synthetic hair, electrical conduit, and recycled paper pulp into large individual pieces that are to be viewed together as an accumulative installation.

Spencer exploits the inherent qualities of the different materials to make contrasting abstract sculptures with strong outlines and interior patterns. Rough cut oak lathing tied with huge rope knots rhythmically bends and contorts to frame an outdoor entryway. Wood strips selectively stained with concrete dyes make sharp rectilinear thrusts into space from densely built up interior forms that suggest walls and rooms. Bristling with rusted steel spikes, free standing organic shapes, cast from recycled paper pulp similar to sun hardened gray mud, curl upon themselves into cave-like structures.

As social critiques, Spencer’s installations recall the successful use of limited resources in traditional African communities and propose that the critical housing needs in this country could be met with the recycling of the material abundance found in our neighborhoods.
